Shop Drawings: What Clients Should Check Before Fabrication

Shop drawings develop specific information about an item or system that will be manufactured or installed. Joinery is a familiar example, but the term can apply to many project elements. Their value lies in turning an agreed design direction into a clearer proposal for making, assembling and coordinating the item.

Distinguish design intent from fabrication information

A concept image may show the character of a cabinet without defining every dimension, hinge or internal fitting. Shop drawings should explain the information required for their stated scope.

Ask who prepares them and who reviews them. A designer, supplier, fabricator and specialist consultant may each have different responsibilities. Establish those responsibilities before treating a drawing approval as permission to proceed with every part of manufacturing or installation.

Confirm dimensions against the actual location

Dimensions should be checked against reliable site information and the selected equipment. Review nearby doors, walls, ceilings and services.

A unit that fits a nominal plan may not fit a site with different levels or an unrecorded obstruction. Identify dimensions that require site verification before fabrication. The project team should agree who measures, when they measure and how any discrepancy is returned to the drawing process.

Review operation and material details

Look beyond the external appearance. Check opening directions, internal storage, handles, hinges and access panels where they are part of the scope. Review specified finishes against approved samples.

A particular edge, joint or trim may need an enlarged detail to explain it. Ask how the item can be cleaned and maintained. These questions help the review address usability rather than approving only the elevation that resembles the original rendering.

Keep approval and revision records clear

Use a documented review status and confirm how comments will be incorporated. Do not compare different drawing versions without noting their revisions.

Material substitutions or changes to equipment can affect previously reviewed details. Record what is approved, what is approved with comments and what needs resubmission through the project's agreed process. Critical construction, structural or performance matters belong with the relevant qualified project partners, even when the client has accepted the visual direction.

Your review checklist

  • Identify preparer and review responsibilities
  • Check site-verified dimensions
  • Review internal operation and access
  • Compare finishes with approved samples
  • Retain the final manufacturing revision

Does a signed drawing remove the need for site checks?

No. The approval process should define which information has been confirmed and who is responsible for site verification. Unresolved dimensions or coordination items should remain explicitly identified rather than disappearing behind an approval signature.
